From Inner-City Nobody to Brilliant Neurosurgeon

When Ben Carson was in school, his classmates called him the class dummy. Many--including Ben himself--doubted that he would ever amount to anything. But his mother never let him quit. She encouraged Ben to do better and reach higher for his dreams, and eventually he discovered a deep love of learning. Today this young boy from the inner-city is one of the world's greatest pediatric neurosurgeons. Through determination and lot of hard work, Ben overcame his many obstacles and is now dedicated to saving the lives of critically ill children around the world.

I bought this book because I work with young people and I wanted to find something powerful and inspirational. I wasn't disappointed. What an amazing biography it is! Ben Carson, grew up deprived and marginalised. He had a strong faith in God and an influential mother who taught him to use his brain to find solutions to his problems. He was teased and his peers assumed he wasn't clever, but with the help of his mother and his faith, he had a dream to become a doctor. This is a page turner and the fact it deals with overcoming prejudice, childhood poverty and faith is something that will appeal to young people who have dreams. Ideal for 9-12 year-olds.
