The ESV Reader's Bible was created for those who want to read Scripture precisely as it was originally written - namely, as an unbroken narrative. Verse numbers, chapter and section headings, and translation footnotes are helpful navigational and interpretive tools, but are also relatively recent conventions. In the ESV Reader's Bible they have been removed from the Bible text. The result is a new kind of Bible reading experience in a volume that presents Scripture as one extended storyline. On the top of each page a verse range is included for orientation. Other features include a single-column text setting, readable type, and a book-like format. The Reader's Bible is a simple but elegant edition, and is perfect for devotional reading, for extended Bible reading, or for focusing on the overarching narrative of the Bible.

Finding the readers edition enjoyable, I'm covering more in the bible than I used to. It's my go to bible now for sitting down for a quiet time with God's word.

After years of using a smartphone app for my daily Bible readings I came across several articles and social media posts recommending using a physical Bible instead of an app. After first dismissing these as anti-technology, I realised my quiet times needed reinvigorating as I wasn't taking in what I was reading and couldn't recall it later in the day. I decided to see if the authors of those articles had a point, and this Bible sounded just the job. As someone who tends to "say" each word in my head when reading, as opposed to just scanning the page, this really is a whole new way of reading of the Bible. It flows better and reading each paragraph continuously makes it easier to understand and recall the main points of each section. I also seem to be able to read quicker without stumbling over verse numbers, and get through more each day. Although there are no verse numbers in the text, chapter numbers are displayed, and the header at the top of each page displays the verse numbers that the page spans, making it fairly quick to find the actual verse in a regular Bible or app when I want to look something up in a commentary for example. At over 1800 pages and 4cm thick, this is a substantial book that feels sturdy to hold and lays flat when open. It is attractively presented with a cloth cover and cardboard slip case which should mean it remains in good condition for many years. I think it is well worth the surprisingly low price.
