As a minister I have dozens of Bibles, both physical and digital, both text only Bibles and assorted Study Bibles, and am fully conversant with the use of electronic Bible study facilities on desktop and tablet devices. I also have the ESV Anglicised personal edition since the ESV has become my current preaching Bible of choice. However, there is still room for this one! The production quality is exceptional - hinged gift box, real leather binding, gilt edging and clear printing. The wealth of information on any given page is impressive - cross references, footnotes, and even colour illustrations, with minimal show-through and without appearing cluttered. All this and the size is still manageable. It is certainly a heavy book, and would tire the arm if you were to stand preaching from it for half an hour! However it still fits easily into my zip-up study Bible case, indeed with room (just) to squeeze in a slim Greek New Testament too. The translation itself is commendably accurate, using a literal rather than idiomatic approach. I am not sufficiently linguistically equipped to speak for the Hebrew but the close parallel with the NT Greek is excellent - I just assume that the OT is as good as it says it is. There is still a tendency, however, to use gender-specific rather than more inclusive language (for example ‘adelphoi’ is generally translated as ‘brothers’ rather than ‘sisters and brothers’) but other new translations are available (such as the TNIV) which give inclusive language greater emphasis over literal translation. The introductions to each book are extremely useful and repay the time taken to read them through. There are also dozens of fascinating articles at the back of the Bible, although again there is an Evangelical bias in a few which may surprise any slightly more Liberal-minded folk. Still, if you regard these articles as simply one expert viewpoint around the scholarly table then it gives you the chance to seek out alternative views to help form your own opinion. Sometimes it is good to put away the electronic devices (e.g when taking a retreat or holiday) and to immerse yourself in back-to-basics Bible reading. This Study Edition is sure to keep you reading for a long time.

This is my first Study Bible and it's a cracker! It brings God's Word to life using easy-to-understand language. I don't mind that it isn't Anglicised. The illustrations are superb and the notes are fantastic. Yes it's a wee bit heavy and yes the print is a tad on the small size for my middle-aged eyes (if there had been a leather-bound large print version I'd have opted for that instead) but I think they got the font size right in light of the amount of notes, additional material, etc. If the font was larger the Bible would be even heavier and less portable than it is now (I don't take this Bible to church on Sundays) Worth mentioning the online version with notes and additional resources that becomes available when you purchase a physical Bible. Really great, easy to cross-reference passages, insert bookmarks, highlight text and add in your own notes. I have embarked on the included study plan that enables you to read the whole Bible in one year. The more I read and learn the more I want to read and learn!

Purchased a hardback copy last month, but have now treated myself to the genuine leather-bound edition. It's a big heavy book, but the font is easy to read, the illustrations and maps are superb, as are the many introductions and articles. There's a personal-size edition (minus some articles) coming out in January 2011 and that will be a real bonus. This has to be one of the best Study Bibles out there - pity there's no Anglicised version.
