55th Annual Grammy Award's Gospel Round Up

Lynn Williamson

We celebrate the winners and finalists from last week's 55th Annual Grammy Awards, with special congratulations to Matt Redman on his double win!

More than just gowns and bad jokes, the Grammy's is one of the few major awards events to give attention to Christian Gospel Music.

The 55th Grammy Awards was no exception, it had some really beautiful dresses (more than a hint of jealousy I'm afraid), plenty of jokes that really should have gone straight to the cutting room floor and 2 really big wins for UK worship leader Matt Redman.

Redman won Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Perfomance and Best Contemporary Christian Music Song for 10,000 Reasons beating some pretty tough competition.

The other nominations for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Perfomance were

  • Jesus, Friend of Sinners by Casting Crowns
  • Take Me To the King by Tamela Mann
  • Go Get It by Mary Mary
  • My Testimony by Marvin Sapp

Best Gospel Song was awarded to Mary Mary for Go Get It

Other nominations were

  • Hold On by James Fortune & FIYA, Monica & Fred Hammond
  • I Feel Good by Fred Hammond
  • My Testimony by Marvin Sapp
  • Released by Bill Winston & Living Word featuring Donald Lawrence

10,000 Reasons triumphed in the Best Comtemporary Christian Music Song category along with Your Presence Is Heaven by Israel & New Breed - a tie!

Other nominations were

  • Jesus, Friend of Sinners by Casting Crowns
  • When Mercy Found Me by the Rhett Walker Band (from my favourtie album of 2012!)
  • White Flag by Chris Tomlin & Passion

Gravity by Lecrae won Best Gospel Album ahead of Jesus At The Center Live

Eye On It by TobyMac won Best Contemporary Christian Music Album beating Come to the Well by Casting Crowns and Where I Find You by Kari Jobe

A couple of notable other award winners were Babel by Mumford & Sons winning Album of the Year - a band with so much Christian content flowing through their lyrics and another homegrown talent and No Church In The Wild winning Best Rap/Sung Collaboration from Jay-Z, Kanye West featuring Frank Ocean & The Dream as it was the most thought provoking song for me in 2012.

With a massive 81 awards, the Grammy's is one of the most prestigious events on the music calendar and it's great to see so many UK artists blazing a trail for the next generation of musicians.
