Christian Resources for Children Moving Schools

Can you remember your first day of school? Whilst I don’t remember my first day at primary school, I do vividly remember my first day at middle school (I grew up in Dorset, we had a three-school system. I’ve since found out that’s odd) and my first day at Grammar School.

Middle School, I remember standing in my grey and blue uniform in our front garden while my mum took pictures she’d later present to me on my wedding day, watching as my twin sister went through the same prancing and posing, before we went off to two different schools (seriously, it was intentional).

Grammar School, reunited with my sister and we walked up the long driveway, far too warm because despite the Indian Summer the weatherman had promised us we’d opted for both a blazer and knitted jumper.

I don’t tell you these anecdotes from my yet-unnamed biography out of nostalgia. I tell you because, we all, in some way, remember those first day nerves - whether it’s a new school, university or job. The days leading up to it and the day of are fraught with sweaty palms and (usually irrational) fears. Not helped by siblings who tell tales of lessons in greenhouse style “glass rooms” (thanks to my older sister for that fear!) and awful school dinners.
