With these four short words, Jesus Culture announce their new album for 2017. Following up Let It Echo, the Bethel Church offshoot have grown into their own sound, their own identity, and their own calling. Their self-described ministry to ‘ignite revival in the nations of the earth’ has taken them across the globe, leaving a passion for worship in their wake.
With Jesus Culture artists pushing out into discovering what worship can be, there is one prediction I can certainly make of this release: it will sound unlike anything else out there. This new sound has been teased out and tried on for size, across Jesus Culture’s releases from the past year. In November, Chris Quilala released Split the Sky. An album that explored how worship music could adopt a range of new sounds and styles, yet remain true to its passion for connecting people with God.
Then, in April just gone, Kim Walker-Smith strode into On My Side, a deeply impressive studio album that soared in a way only an album ber her could. Even the first single off the album, Throne Room, was a sweeping testament to the movement’s commitment to reaching upwards with creativity and power. Its sound was like nothing else, but her heart has never changed. There is desperation in the song. A deep desire to run to God, to his glory, drove the album into becoming a bestselling release.
These new sounds might just have been an indication of where we’re heading. That pushing out requires fearlessness, a boldness to step into worship. Like stepping out onto the water’s surface, it’s an act of faith, trying something new. Something not done before.
I eagerly await Love has a Name, and am excited about what the future holds for Jesus Culture. For where it will go, and what it will sound like.
Released on the 11th August 2017, Love Has a Name can be pre-ordered here.
