As soon as we heard that there was a new CD coming from Bethel’s Steffany Gretzinger I couldn’t wait to get a listen and you’ll be pleased to know I was not disappointed. Following on from the success of The Undoing, Blackout sees a continuation and maturity of one very talented singer-songwriter.
Gretzinger is pushing what modern praise looks like with this new release. Her voice is at times ethereal, haunting and then just WOW. She reminds me of Jesus Culture’s Kim Walker-Smith crossed with Hillsong’s Brooke Fraser Ligertwood but still remains a unique sound for the Church.
This album is not your average praise and worship CD. It’s one that digs a little deeper and at times could be mistaken for something you’d hear in the Top 10 charts - and very much in a good way.
There are times throughout the album where you can hear her emotion and soul speak right to your heart and others where the musical arrangement behind the lyrics really take on a life of their own.
The album also includes a couple of interesting interludes that break up the album. One a raw honest stripped back song Forever Amen, an ‘unproduced’ track where you really hear the beauty of Steffany’s voice and then an instrumental interlude preceding the final track Blackout.
Personal favourite tracks include the first on the album Save Me - a beautiful introduction to Steffany’s style and voice, it’s a real cry out and one that cannot fail to move.
Then you’ve got Oxygen featuring an honest and simple refrain that perfectly compliments her sound. “You sustain my every moment” - a gentle reminder of God’s life-giving presence.
The title track Blackout is edgy, with synth sounds and wouldn’t seem out of place next to the likes of today’s contemporary chart bestsellers - from Demi Lovato to Churches. It’s a great way to finish off a great album!
All in all, if you’re looking for a worship album that speaks truth through poignant lyrics and with real heart then look no further. You’ll enjoy listening to this in the car, in quiet times of personal reflection and when you need to stick something on that’s just a joy to listen to and does Christian music proud.
Blackout is due for release on 30th March and is available to pre-order now from Eden.co.uk
