2017 promises to be an exciting year for Christian Cinema, so take a look at our top 7 movies for 2017.
Christianity and Cinema appear to be going through a somewhat-messy divorce.
In the beginning the two were near-inseparable. From 1903’s Samson and Delilah, to Cecil B. DeMille’s Biblical Epics, to George Stevens’ The Greatest Story Ever Told, the marriage of a new art form with powerful stories seem unbreakable. They seemed the perfect couple.
But as Cinema, and mass audience taste, changed through the mid-to-late 20th Century, it gradually drew inwards. As studios struggled to finance great Biblical and historical epics, films became inward looking, focusing on human stories that were subjective, and the focus shifted from what stories were told, to how they were told.
Cinema felt it was better to live the single life instead.
But that doesn’t mean there are no more Christian films being made. Far from it. With newer, cheaper technologies available, Christian films began to flourish again. New stories of faith, or men and women following God were being told. And it is these stories that have come to show that there is yet hope for Christianity and Cinema.
For 28 years the story of Silence has been on the mind of Martin Scorsese, itching to be told on the silver screen. The story of two missionaries in feudal Japan is uncompromising, honest, and is the apotheosis of the years spent by Scorsese looking at the question of God’s silence in the face of human suffering.
Silence DVD release date is 8th May 2017.
Mel Gibson returns to his religious roots with this true life story of Desmond Doss, as conscientious objector who enlists as a medic and saves the lives of 75 without ever touching a gun. With intense battle sequences and epic scope, Hacksaw Ridge places Mel Gibson back on the same firm cinematic ground that films like The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.
Hacksaw Ridge DVD release date is 22nd May 2017.
The creators of God’s Not Dead have changed lanes somewhat. Their smash-hit God’s Not Dead films were about the outward fight for faith, but Do You Believe? is about a dozen individuals all finding God, and the internal journey that led them to the Cross. Told with the same hand-on-heart passion, Do You Believe? lays down a challenge to views to ask how honest and true their faith is.
The Do You Believe UK DVD release date is 28 July 2017.
A moving story of fatherhood, of the past, and the faith of servicemen in the Vietnam war. Telling the twin stories of two young fathers reporting for duty, and the chance meeting of their sons decades later, Faith of our Fathers was a moving hit in America, where opinions on combat and veterans vary wildly. An open discussion between faith and cynicism, it is a film which appeals to a broad range of viewers.
Lee Strobel’s investigation into the real evidence of Jesus’ life and death has been a touchstone of belief for readers the world over; it touches on the honesty of searching for meaning, and the challenges of what is confronted. Taking the story of Strobel's journalistic pursuit, the film studio Pure Flix have crafted a cinematic and thrilling chase of one man’s Case for Christ.
They are loved for their powerful songs of redemption and freedom; they are sung in different languages across the globe; their name has universal recognition for creating songs that empower faith - but who are Hillsong? This music documentary charts that journey, and collects performances of their greatest hits in a visual form. Perfect either as an introduction to Hillsong, or a wistful journey through songs known and loved.
Finally, after years of speculations; casting and recasting; wild rumours and debates, the Shack is coming to cinema screen. With a UK theatrical release scheduled, Wm Paul Young’s powerful allegorical story of one man’s tragedy leading him on a path to eternity is told with imaginative flair and the latest in CGI effects. With star turns from Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Octavia Spencer (The Help), The Shack promises to be the Christian cinema event of the year.
