For Christians wanting deeper biblical understanding

Clarifies teachings in 1 and 2 Thessalonians

You will strengthen your faith and discern truth

This practical commentary helps you explore Paul's letters to the Thessalonians.
Do you enjoy reading other people's correspondence, especially the letters of famous people? This book explores two of the great Apostle Paul's earliest epistles, those to the Thessalonian church. In them he bares his heart to reveal his love for those he led to Christ, and his concern for their welfare, as he provides instructions to new Christians. We also learn something of his travelling companions, his hopes and fears, his personal concerns, his passionate concern for the truth, and much about the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Read this book to learn how to live the Christian life, how to avoid false doctrine, and how the Thessalonians' zeal and the Apostle's teaching can be applied to your own life.

This is a first rate verse by verse commentary of the apostle Paul’s two letters to the Thessalonian church. It is readable, interesting and thought provoking. Written from a conservative evangelical point of view, Mr. Jebb’s exposition is sure footed and Biblical. Some commentaries gloss over difficulties, this work does not. In fact he spends longer discussing them. For instance, he devotes 5 pages discussing the meaning of the difficult verse ‘Do not despise prophecies’. Mr. Jebb is not afraid to draw on the wisdom of others, quoting extensively from other commentaries. This enriches the work and also saves time for a busy sermon preparer! The author also shows his pastor’s heart with helpful applications and interesting illustrations. He writes for today’s Christians in today’s world and today’s church, showing that the timeless truths of these two short letters are as relevant as the day they were written. This was, for me, a highlight of the book. If you are only going to own one modern commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, then you will not go far wrong with this one.

Dedicated students of the Bible who already have Commentaries on their bookshelves may well wonder what new observations a new title like this will offer. Perhaps the best response is that good teaching is not always introducing new things but reinforcing knowledge and understanding. The two Epistles to the Thessalonians occupy a unique place in the Biblical canon as it may well be the Apostle Paul?s first inspired Letter. The amazing amount of biblical teaching that the apostle was able to fit into his short stay at Thessalonica is clearly indicated by the many doctrines he discusses as already familiar to the Thessalonians. Part of DayOne Publications ?Exploring the Bible? series, this is both a practical and pastoral title and the introductory remarks greatly acknowledge the growth of a Christian mind through good teaching which is faithful to the text, to the overall theology of scripture and which is wisely and relevantly applied to the lives of Christians in contemporary society. This commentary marries the sound theology, challenging ethics and fruitful pastoring that Paul set out to record in his Epistles and throughout gives the wise counsel, instruction and encouragement that believers needed then and that we need more urgently today. This is a well presented Commentary and treatment of the two Epistles. While Chapters of the Epistles are commented on individually, the writer understands the demands of his readers by highlighting the themes that Paul is writing on specifically in each instance. This is skilfully done with excellent applications to current church life, ministry and outreach activities. This is a practical book which readers will be gripped by. It is of a reasonable length, encourages reading and would be a useful addition to a church or personal library. The Notes at the end of the Chapters are interesting and will be for many, a spur to wider reading. The book has excellent Appendices also and one of these, ?The Theme of Deception in the New Testament? is an interesting addition, given its scope and interest today. There is a lot to be gained from this book and as an accessible and practical commentary deserves wide reading. From a personal point of view, the second chapter of this book ?The Model Witness? talking of 1 Thessalonians 2, is as clear, vibrant and urgent an exposition of scripture that you will read anywhere. Very rarely would I seek out a book to commend one chapter highly. If I had to do so, this would be such a book.
