As part of the Christian Bible, the New Testament is at once widely influential and (especially among the young and the educated) increasingly unknown. Those who want to know the basics can find in this introduction the sort of information that locates these ancient writings in their historical and literary context. Those who want to learn why these compositions have had such impact can find here an appreciation for the religious experiences of the first Christians that forced them to reinterpret their Jewish and Greek heritage and reshape their symbolic world. In addition to providing the broad conceptual and factual framework for the New Testament --- including the process by which distinct compositions became a sacred book --- this introduction provides as well a more detailed examination of specific compositions that have had particularly strong influence, including Paul's letters to the Corinthians and Romans, the four Gospels, and the Book of Revelation.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This little book offers an overview of the New Testament that can hardly be faulted. It admits the reader into the minds of those who had a hand in fashioning what we now have as gospels (with Acts), letters and Revelation (this being appended to John’s gospel). It is a marvel of brevity. Every sentence is focussed and concise, and paragraphs whilst short make their point. Biblical passages are referenced so that the reader will find their Bible reading enlightened. Its language is generally easy but on occasion the inclusion of a glossary could have been beneficial in broadening its readership. Even for the those who have worked with their Bibles for years there are occasional new things – did you know that St Paul was the earliest self-designated Pharisee? The book is to be thoroughly recommended. For anyone who wants to discover how such a variety of writings as those of the New Testament can be an integrated whole and therefore to discover how its Gospel message transcends them all, then this is their book.
