D. Earl Cripe, Ph.D (1934-2011) held firmly to Historic Orthodox Christian Theology that the Bible is the only guide to the faith and practice of the Church. Towards that end during his more than forty-seven years of ministry he penned numerous volumes of expository Bible commentaries. I knew that I must start studying the Bible comprehensively, contextually, and in earnest. Whether it was wise or unwise I started in the Gospels. In the past 47 years I have worn out a number Bibles and some them I filled completely up with notes. I am ashamed to admit that now when I go to many of the books of the Bible I struggle with the feeling that I already know what it says, but I have never had that feeling about the four Gospels. Every time I go back to them, the words of Jesus continue to open out in new heights and depths of meaning. In some books, my understanding does not change much but in the Gospels I am often amused at what I had written about something Jesus said when I studied it thirty-five years ago. As I have readied myself for this study, it is no different. For me, the Gospels are always new. I trust that this introduction will give you a bit of insight into what lies ahead, and that the Lord will use these feeble efforts to do for you what He has done for me, and more, in this study of the Gospels.
