In this new addition to the Old Testament Library series, Graeme Auld writes, "This book is about David." The author demonstrates how all the other personalities in First and Second Samuel--including Samuel, for whom the books were named--are present so that we may see and know David better. These fascinating stories detail the lives of David, his predecessors, and their families. Auld explains that though we read these books from beginning to end, we need to understand that they were composed from end to beginning. By reconstructing what must have gone before, the story of David sets up and explains the succeeding story of monarchy in Israel.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

The Old Testament Library will be a familiar friend to many and this addition does not apparently replace/displace Hans Hilhelm Herteberg’s earlier commentary in the series. Auld’s approach is intriguing in that it aims to set out the text in the form in which it is found in the manuscripts, hence the size of the book, over 600 pages without the indices. How far the reader agrees with the author’s view that the two Samuel are really about David will depend on the reader’s point of view, but there is no doubt that David’s story is one of the finest in any literature and deserves a commentary as substantial as this one.
