Habakkuk Simply Explained. The days in which Habakkuk preached were a dark time for the church in the Old Testament. God's people were suffering at the hands of others in the community, and the law of God was being sidelined in society. The prophet finds the situation intolerable. He questions why God would allow such things to happen and to continue.

Why is God not doing something about the suffering and injustice? Habakkuk learns that the just shall live by faith even though the covenant nation itself is about to be destroyed, and the prophecy ends with a psalm of joyful praise to God.

    The Good Book Stall

Just over 30 years ago the first of the Welwynseries of Bible commentaries was published. Since then, Evangelical Press has published over 50 in the series. With very few exceptions, the quality has remained high. It is, in my opinion, the best modern set of evangelical, non technical commentaries that are accessible to the ordinary Christian. The series tag line is simply explained, but simple does not mean dumbed down or trivial. Rather, simple means easy to understand. This book is another gem. In 12 short chapters Dr. Currid brings to life the book of Habakkuk. He shows that the questions he asked about evil in the world are just the kind of questions that Christians ask today. He demonstrates that the answer we need to hear is the same: God is sovereign and in control. Dr. Currid is unusual in that he is both a seminary professor and a church pastor. This shines through in his writing. The book is a happy combination of scholarship and pastoral application. When he explains the meaning of a Hebrew word it is always with a purpose. When he applies the word it is always relevant and helpful. The chapters are full of interesting illustrations and points to ponder. A Christian who wants to understand the book of Habakkuk better need look no further than this work. Busy pastors and teachers will find a wealth of information and ideas on how to preach from this book. Highly recommended.
