While not ignoring practical lessons that can be drawn from the life of Joseph, Roger Ellsworth fastens our attention on his place in the drama of God's redemptive plan. The sometimes chaotic nature of Joseph's circumstances did not mean that God's plan was thrown off track. Those circumstances were part of the plan. In our own chaotic and turbulent times, we can rest assured that God is moving steadily forward to finish his plan to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Another brilliant book from the Face to Face series. The author takes you on the journey of Joseph from his sale by his brothers into captivity to his death. I had never thought there were any comparisons between Joseph and Jesus but to work through the book made me really think about it. Joseph was put in captivity, he had great trials but it was all part of God's plan for him. The same as Jesus's life, death and resurrection was all part of God's plan. Each chapter finishes with 2 or 3 questions for you to study further followed by a section to think about and discuss. I am definitely going to read some more of this series after all I have fifteen to choose from.

?Joseph ? Encountering the man who saved his people? is one of Day One Publications Face to Face Series, a set of books providing character studies of important Bible figures and perhaps offering a renewed perspective of stories and situations with which we have become so accustomed, that we lose sight of the important points being made by the Bible writers. The author acknowledges that Joseph?s life is a story of dramatic ups and downs, but illustrates through 16 chapters (each of which is a manageable and accessible five or six pages), his journey through challenging circumstances to a fulfilment of the plan that God had set out for his life. The Book of Genesis provides the account of Joseph?s life and this is very well analysed and dissected here and I would particularly commend the thought given to the chapter headings which mark the progression of the story through its important milestones. This is a practical book and tells us about Joseph, his character, his life situation and his place in Bible history. It is easy to forget that Joseph was part of the holy line that was to produce the Messiah and was to be a family characterised by believing, loving, worshipping, obeying and serving God and it is evident that that spirit burned within Joseph in the face of family opposition. An early lesson is that the health and well-being of the church comes from those who stand for Bible doctrines, against deteriorating faith and for the truths of God?s holy Word. I like this book a lot. It is an encouragement to read alongside the character study and re-discover and consolidate our understanding. This is a warm character study and the narrative is very well told alongside the points to consider as each portion of the story is told. I would commend books like this strongly for reinforcing truth and clarifying parts of the Bible that might be hard for us to understand.
