Building on the foundation of the popular volumes The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners and The New Testament for Beginners, Griggs offers a series of volumes based on the individual books of the Bible. A leader's guide and a participant section are included for each book.

This new addition to the series looks at the Gospel of Luke, perhaps the most popular Gospel with its stories of the birth of Jesus, the boy Jesus conversing in the Temple, the good Samaritan, the prodigal son, the poor widow and her two copper coins, and rich Zacchaeus in a sycamore tree.

    The Good Book Stall

You can never really evaluate any resource for group Bible study use until you’ve actually used it. Icebreaker games might meet a wall of resistance! Discussion topics that appear great on paper may fall flat with a resounding thud! Well, this volume looks promising. Paul Walaskay provides Part 1, a ‘Participant’s Guide’, which works through Luke’s Gospel in 7 chapters, and could, of course, be used by an individual. Part 2, the ‘Leader’s Guide’, by Donald Griggs, runs in close parallel with that, and is full of creative ideas. It’s difficult to keep the two sections apart. A leader will need to have absorbed the Participant’s Guide, and I can well imagine a Participant straying into the Leader’s Guide. The leader may struggle to restrict the meeting to the suggested 1-hour, I think. But it looks a useful guide for a group seeking fresh material.
