Three books in one!

Methods and advice to help you study and apply the Bible in this Alan Stibbs Trilogy, that includes three of his books: Understanding God's Word, Expounding God's Word and Obeying God's Word.

Understanding God's Word: A clear and thoughtful book giving guidance and practical suggestions to help to discover firstly what Scripture actually says - and secondly what it means.

Expounding God's Word: This draws out the central principles and methods of biblical exposition, with plenty of practical illustrations and examples. It will help all those leading Bible studies, teaching or preaching to get God's message across in a relevant and easily understandable way.

Obeying God's Word: 'The Word of God has a practical authority, which determines what we believe, what we teach, and how we act.' If you believe God meant His Word to be read with all your mind, but also all your heart and your soul, this is the book for you.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a trilogy of short books brought together under one cover. Personally I thought this book began well but as it progressed lost its vitality. As an introduction to biblical exegesis the first book Understanding God’s Word was well written and contained all the basic tools for the preparation of a sermon or Bible Study. Although the book Expounding God’s Word contains some helpful hints on preparing sermons and talks, its methodology is somewhat dated. Furthermore, the occasional use of exclusive language grated with my belief that God uses women as well as men in delivering His word in the variety of settings covered by Stibbs. The Trilogy concludes with a section on Obeying God’s Word. This is the weakest section of the Trilogy. Having spent time exploring how the Bible can be understood in greater depth I felt that Stibbs failed to explore the complexity and difficulties that human beings face when their desire is to be faithful to the essence of God’s word. Finally, would I recommend this trilogy? The answer is yes and no. I wholeheartedly recommend the first section, suggest reading the second alongside some more contemporary writers on homiletics and reject the third section in favour of a more developed work on Christian discipleship.
