Introduces the diverse field of feminist studies on the "Hebrew Bible". This work offers a survey of the history and issues as they relate to feminist readings and readers of the "Hebrew Bible". It is biased toward western feminist scholarship because of the historical developments of the scholarship in general and biblical studies in particular.
Describes the lives and works of pioneering scholars from a range of geographical backgrounds to give readers a sense that "real" women stand behind the development of feminist interpretations of the Hebrew Bible.
Presents the results of feminist research organised by themes (e.g. sexual violence) and not by Biblical text (e.g. Genesis) to show readers the close connection between feminist Bible readings and the feminist-progressive movement in the West.
Chapters include:
-From the "Woman's Bible" to the "Women's Bible": The History of Feminist Apporaches to the Hebrew Bible
-A Career as a Feminist Biblical Scholar
-Gendering the Hebrew Bible: Methodological Considerations
-Rape, Enslavement and Marriage: Sexual Violence in the Hebrew Bible
-Hagar, Ruth and Jezebel as "Other Women": Integrating Postcolonial Perpectives
