A surprising number of well-known Bible verses are commonly misused and misunderstood. Whether intentionally or not, people take important verses out of context, and pastor and Bible scholar Eric J. Bargerhuff has seen the effects: confusion, faulty decisions, sin being dismissed, and more. With a deft touch, he helps readers understand and apply sound principles of interpretation and application of twenty familiar verses. This concise high-interest approach appeals to the curious as well as readers concerned about incorrect theology.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is an excellent book that should be read by many, especially by those that like to quote scripture during an argument or discussion, because it highlights that when we do this we are actually misusing the Words of God, not only because we use them as a tool to prove ourselves right rather than to action God’s intent, but because when we do it we invariably take the verse out of context and this in turn leads to further misuse and confusion. The Word of God is not a pick and mix sweetie counter, but rather it is a holistically satisfying feast where all the dishes must be served together and in the right order to satisfy and enjoy to the full. The author takes seventeen of the most frequently used ‘argument’ or ‘statement’ quotes and then in an easy to read manner shows where they are being distorted, through being misunderstood and used without context. He is not overly harsh or condemnatory but is honest and frank using real life cases, often at his own expense, to demonstrate the errors and how easy it is for them to arise, but how important it is to put them right. A very helpful and illuminating book on an important and somewhat overlooked topic.
