Newton explains the origin of the book in the Preface: "The following sermons have been published at the request of the teachers of the Sunday-schools of St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia. For the last two years, there has been a service for the children of this congregation, on the afternoon of the first Sunday of the month. On these occasions, the children occupy the body of the church. The usual service is performed, and a sermon preached, designed especially for the benefit of the children.
