Although his mother was a faithful Christian, Augustine managed to stray into a sinful life. His life changed when he realised the truth of the Gospel. Augustine became a bishop and a tower of faith in the early church. His life is a glimpse into the days of Roman Africa and a powerful picture of the wisdom and durability of God's Word in a pagan culture.

I would recommned this book to anyone wanting to discover more about St Augustine, (most reluctant) Bishop of Hippo. It would make interesting reading for anyone from age ten upwards. Although a book targetted at older children, it is thoroughly researched by a graduate in Ancient History and gives an excellent insight into life towards the end of the Roman Empire. I was particularly struck by how modern the themes are: for example, Augustine as a teenager got into bad company which led him to reject the Christian faith, causing his mother, Monica, the same heartache experienced by so many Christian mothers today. As the tale unfolds, the suspense builds until it is hard to put the book down. There are many twists and turns before Augustine returns to the Christian faith and devotes the remainder of his life to serving God.
