Strong enough to rule?

A tearful bride and then a reluctant second in line to the throne might not have appeared fir for the throne…

But, against the odds, she was!

Mary was a young girl born to privilege, from the Royal line, heir to the throne of England, Scotland and Ireland – and destined to reign herself and change her country. She was brought up to believe in the God of the Bible rather than the fabricated teachings of priests. It was this personal faith that would be her strength as she left her homeland to marry and eventually to rule.

After a storm of tears and a rough sea crossing Mary’s marriage to her first cousin became a love match. Both husband and wife trusted God and as the wind of history blew their circumstances and their future was changed dramatically.

William and Mary of Orange influenced the religious and political environment of Great Britain in ways that can still be seen today, and spread to other countries. Their Glorious Revolution resulted in one of the most important constitutional documents in English history – the Bill of Rights – where the powers of the sovereign were limited and the rights of Parliament and the rules for freedom of speech were set out; Liberties that have existed for centuries but still have to be defended.

The Trailblazer’s series collects great stories from Christians of the past and delivers them to the young people of today. This gripping and astonishing story from Linda Finlayson will challenge young readers to trust God as Mary of Orange did.

A well–known and long–standing series.

And I thought I knew my history! This biography of Mary of Orange, daughter of Charles the second’s brother James is told sensitively and with historical accuracy. Born into a time of turmoil and religious strife, Mary and her sister Ann were pawns in the political struggles between rulers. Firstly we learn of Mary and her sister’s childhood, torn away from their father because he married a young Roman Catholic girl on the death of his first wife, and that was anathema to the king. At the age of fifteen Mary is married off to a foreign prince, albeit her cousin, but a stranger from a strange land nevertheless. And so the story continues. Many historical facts and characters appear as the story unfolds and I learnt much about this young woman and her life that I did not know before. Not just for young people! This would be an enlightening read for many.
