Sam Becker has been having nightmares and waking up to distressing paintings that he does not remember creating. And he is he haunted by his inability to recall a night in his childhood that scarred him forever. When Sam encounters fallen angels, footsoldiers of hell who are intent on destroying him, he begins to piece together the puzzle of his forgotten memories and it becomes clear that he and his childhood friends are in mortal danger.

Jonah, Carly, Jenna and J have also been suffering from the same vivid nightmares as Sam, and when Sam summons them to St. Louis they learn of the war between the fallen angels and the guardian forces of heaven. The five friends discover that they are watchers, gifted with the ability to see the war that rages around them and a vital part of the prophecy that could end the war and save humanity.

But when the fallen angels detect that the watchers' power is growing, the five friends find themselves in a fight for survival...
