An inspiring account of the fight for the rights of those who lost partners in the military, I Married a Soldier is a passionate fight for what is right. It will cause you to think about what injustices you see, and what you feel called to change.

Brenda Hale had been married for 22 years when her husband, Mark, was killed in Afghanistan. He was the longest serving soldier to be killed in action.

Describing the shock, grief and huge financial problems Brenda faced immediately after Mark's sudden death, I married a Soldier, shows how her determination to fight for the rights of her two daughters and to take on the Ministry of Defense.

She reveals the suffering of a bereaved forces family and looks at how she found a way through an event that threatened to crush her, by drawing on her faith and on a personal strength she didn't know she had. It shows the personal cost of war, and the need for support for those affected.

Brenda's determination to fight for the rights of families affected by death in action led her into politics as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. This is a story of heroism, love and loss, grief and isolation, but also of faith and hope

A brave and honest account of Brenda Hale's journey through the tragic loss of her husband, Captain Mark Hale, who was killed by an IED whilst serving in Afghanistan. This book highlights the issues faced by military families during periods of separation, and the challenges Brenda faced in the aftermath of losing her husband. Brenda's faith shines through, as does her courage. Be prepared to shed a tear or two.

A book you just can't put down....a beautifully written story, by a new and brilliant author, Rachel Farmer, that tells the story as it really unfolded, warts and all! It describes the best and the worst of what it is to be a soldier's wife in the 21 st century. Laughter and tears are all a part of the richness of this unique book. It is the story of a young ordinary Irish girl who fell in love with a soldier, within a web of complex and difficult circumstances and who later became a loving wife and dedicated mother. Brenda Hale, later Irish politician, lived the British army life and understood what it was to be a part of a family regiment and be 'married' to the army. Her husband, Capt Mark Hale, was everything to Brenda. Then one day her life came to an abrupt halt. For many it would probably have been 'game over' but not for Brenda. Somehow she dug deep....she got back up. The front cover says it all and I was immediately left with the simple questions of what?, why?, when?, how? I was compelled to read the story.....and when I reached the last chapter I could concur with Bear Grylls and his commendation. It was and is a story of courage. It was and is an absolutely inspirational story for anyone and everyone. The story is likely to offer hope to many in all sorts of circumstances and especially those facing grey or even black times, and especially military families all over the world who might have lost loved ones or suffered any kind of loss. This story of true faith, hope and love will undoubtedly bring some strength and hope to all. Further it brings some insight into Northern Ireland. A great read...and a great gift to those of us serving in the armed forces and to those wanting to understand something of what it is and what it takes to be the wife of a soldier. This story has a Christian dimension to it too as both Mark and Brenda had a deep living Christian faith and so a great read for the Christian community too as sometimes it can be a hard struggle to work out our Christian faith in the light of such difficult and tragic events that so often just catch us all out.
