‘So A Comedian Walks Into A Church’ is British comedian, Paul Kerensa, true-life diary documenting his Sunday mornings on the comedy circuit around the country.

The life of a modern comedian takes them all over the place every Friday and Saturday night to make people laugh. Well for this comedian and BBC script writer (‘Miranda’ & ‘Not Going Out’), he continues his tour of the country on Sunday morning by visiting near-by churches to spiritually re-fuel.

Paul decided to write down his hilarious experiences in local churches, proving more often than not the secular comedy circuit is a tougher gig. Seeing the church through the eyes of a comedian is humbling, insightful and revealing. But most of all, you’ll discover what it feels like to walk into a new environment as a stranger to better understand and interact with those who walk through your church door.

About the Author

Paul Kerensa is known as BBC’s go-to guy for ‘gagging up’ sitcom scripts, and has been on the writing teams for ‘Miranda’ and ‘Not Only Out’ for all series. As a stand-up comedian he tours the country, has won ITV’s Take The Mike Award, and was a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards and the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards.

He has performed solo shows for numerous years at Spring Harvest, New wine and Greenbelt, and is a regular speaker at Alpha launches, men’s breakfasts and whole church family comedy nights.

Afterword: When I Surveyed the Wondrous Cross-Section of UK Christianity.

Comedian Paul Kerensa is a church-hopper. He takes the stage each Saturday, and communion each Sunday, wherever his trusty satnav has sent him. Far from home, you can find comedy – and God – in a whole host of places, from Charismatics to Catholics to cafés to chapels on cruise-liners.

Paul’s seen all sides of the church and it's just as varied as the stag dos, work dos and no-can-dos of stand-up comedy. It’s a tale of two circuits, of pulpits and bearpits. Along the way Paul will play to zero people and to seven million, via the rocky road of heckles and putdowns (and that’s just the churches).

Welcome to Paul’s party, the theme: arts and vicars.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This unusual book consists of 175 pages of tightly packed wry observations of the worlds of stand-up comedy and church life in the UK. Don't let the page set-up (cramped sans-serif font and almost non-existent top margin) deter you from buying this enjoyable book. The sub title - Confessions of a kneel-down stand-up gives an apt description of the author, Paul Kerensa who tours the country doing his comedy turns in the week but enjoys worshipping on Sundays wherever he is staying, and in whichever church, chapel or hall is the most convenient. He attends each service with an open mind and by the end of the book the reader will have enjoyed a "Kerensan" tour of several Christian denominations and wide ranging worship styles. His spoken skill of injecting humour translates well to the written word. Not only will you gain insight into the varied church life of today, but you will also be given an insider's look into the world of comedy, cabaret and clubs, and have many laughs along the way. Paul comes across as a thoroughly sincere and likeable man, and if he ever came to my neck of the woods I would go out of my way to hear him.
