f Christians were to vote for their favourite Bible character, Barnabas would surely be in the top ten. Most of us feel drawn to this warm-hearted disciple, who so wonderfully lives up to his name, ‘Son of Encouragement’. In these character studies based on passages in Acts, Robert Dale helps us to appreciate—and encourages us to imitate—this wonderful man, who himself is a reflection of a still greater Man, our Lord Jesus Christ, the greatest Encourager of all.

Each mention of Barnabas in the New Testament is explored to build up his personality, character and experiences. From this Dale draws lessons that modern churches and Christians can learn, and characteristics we would do well to emulate. Conjecture is there but it is kept reasonable. Barnabas was a prominent Christian and the focus on him is maintained although Luke's account mainly follows Paul. The background of the developing, expanding and learning early church is well shown and adds greatly to the attractive picture given. A final chapter looks briefly at whether Barnabas left any writings.
