    The Good Book Stall

I have never really read the Old Testament deeply, I knew about Elijah but after reading this book there are so many similarities in the world Elijah lived in and our world today. I could really understand and admire the great faith and trust that Elijah had. The book shows that at the end of the day Elijah was just like any human and I now realise I have a long way to go to ever get near this man's faith but it isn’t unobtainable or out of my reach. Anything is achievable if you put your trust in God. It tells of the ups and downs of Elijah’s life but not once did Elijah doubt God and he was rewarded for that. Elijah – Man of Fire, Man of Faith wasn't hard to read or understand and I got a lot out of it. After reading this I would really like to read some more of the series.

The name Elijah means ?Jehovah is my God?. In every way, this book demonstrates that the prophet Elijah lived as a witness for God when truths were being compromised, a multi-faith society was emerging and there was corruption and immorality at the highest levels of how society was ordered. The questions posed in this book centre on how we should take our example from Elijah, contending for the truth to be heard, applying the lessons of Elijah?s experience against the times we find ourselves in and encouraging us to extend our thoughts heavenwards, while being active in our witness and efforts in life service. While the book can be seen as an examination of important texts concerning the life of Elijah from the later books in 1st Kings and the early books in 2nd Kings, which is done with the understanding that comes from regular scripture reading and meditation, there are further lessons on personal applications. There are well made points on moral standards, on education, on our attitudes to scripture as our guide for living and on encountering disappointments and frustration. This is a profitable book, full of encouragement for those who find reading some books in the Old Testament a bit daunting. It gives us an insight into the character of Elijah, his ?holy persistence? as the author says, his compassion and his prayer life among other things. The final two chapters of this book, on ?the importance of dying well? and ?the key to spiritual power? are two of the most well composed messages I have read for some time. The author has given us much food for thought and while I might recommend another DayOne book ?Elijah ?Encountering God?s Fiery Prophet? in the ?Face2Face? series, this is one book that I enjoyed reading a great deal and took a lot out of. I would warmly urge Bible Study groups to adopt this for themselves as there are tremendous lessons the author reinforces. I commend this highly
