Was McCheyne for real? Was he just famous because he died so young? Does he have anything to teach us today? In this book, David Robertson, the present-day minister of McCheynes church, St Peters in Dundee, Scotland, seeks to answer these and other questions. Through the use of published sermons, private papers and historical material, this contemporary devotional biography traces McCheynes life and influence from his upbringing, conversion and training for the ministry to the revival that occurred in St Peters in 1839 and his early death. The contemporary relevance of McCheyne for todays church is demonstrated and the glory of God is seen in this wonderful story of what He can do with one consecrated sinner.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

How can the life of young man who died at the age of twenty nine have anything to teach us today? The name of McCheyne is well known, but why is it so revered? These and other questions are answered in this brief biography written by the present minister of his old church, St Peter’s Free Church in Dundee. After a slow start, when the reader can feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar names and places, the book really wakes up when it talks about the revival that began during McCheyne’s ministry (although it actually started in his absence). McCheyne’s commitment to personal holiness is emphasised, and the book’s format, which includes questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, means that the prayerful reader is given plenty of food for thought. The author has added an update to this edition of the book, in which he talks about how the church had dwindled in recent years, but is now growing again. The strategies that have been used to attract people to the church make for thought-provoking reading. A good introduction to a great man of God.
