No one had greater influence for the good of evangelicalism in the nineteen century than Charles Simeon and, amazingly, his influence remains, not least in his endurance under opposition and his encouragement and training of young men to teach and preach. Many men, like John Stott, acknowledge their indebtedness to Simeon's example and the pattern he set for expository ministry. The book aims to be more than a biography. Rather its purpose is to identify and share the teaching Simeon gave concerning preaching and its purpose, and the importance of training young men. It outlines the concern for the Jewish people Christians should have (a subject of contemporary neglect) and the importance of establishing the principle of balance, whether discussing election and human responsibility or any other issue that sadly divides Christians. He explained how often the truth is to be found not in one extreme or the other, or even in the middle, but in both extremes at once.

This is a first rate biography about a man greatly used by God. Charles Simeon remained Pastor of just one church for over 50 years, yet his influence extended far and wide beyond his native England. Born to a privileged background in 1759, Simeon was converted whilst at the University of Cambridge, a town he made his home. He was ordained in the Church of England and soon saw great fruit from his ministry despite opposition from within his own church. Having found for himself, that there was no training on how to preach, he developed his own programme which he shared with others often over a cup of tea! He emphasised the need to preach clearly, simply and with Christ at the centre. Later he wrote a 21 volume series of sermon outlines that covered the whole Bible. It is still in print today. He also strongly supported missionary endeavours especially amongst the Jewish people. This biography is very well written. It is an excellent analysis of his life and actions, highlighting his strengths and weaknesses. I particularly liked the chapter on Charles Simeon being a man of balance. Those from an Anglican background will especially warm to this biography, but all evangelicals will enjoy reading this work. Here is a book to refresh your soul and invigorate your mind. Highly recommended.
