    The Good Book Stall

John and Charles Wesley are amongst the most famous Anglican clergy as well as the founders of the Methodist Movement. If John is often seen as bringing the movement to birth and fostered its growth, Charles is remembered as the poet who allowed his brother's thoughts and theology to take wings through the poetry of remarkable hymns. To an extent, on this 'popular' view, John was the great leader and Charles had a supporting role. This collection of essays is intended to cast clearer light on Charles, his significance in the founding of Methodism but, perhaps of most interest today, his own stature as a theologian and church leader of ecumenical significance. As a “Methodist Anglican with Catholic tendencies”, I was particularly interested in the essays that opened up Charles’ spirituality, his relationship with Roman Catholicism and with Eastern Orthodoxy. The book is not an “easy read”, but it does give a fascinating series of insights from a wide range of scholars and, for me, underlined the tragedy of the division between Methodism and Anglicanism which should never have happened.
