During the Second World War, Christians from many nations and denominations stepped forward with courage, ingenuity and determination to protect and rescue Jews from the Holocaust. In doing so they risked their lives, and many died. Some, such as Corrie ten Boom, are celebrated, but most have been ignored. Historian Tim Dowley tells ten stories of these extraordinary women and men.

'Some books have to be written . . . Defying the Holocaust will make your heart pound.' - Steve Chalke MBE

In the darkest days of the Second World War, the Nazis murdered approximately six million European Jews. Defying the Holocaust tells ten stories of Christians from different countries, various churches and contrasting situations who courageously strove to protect and save Jews. They include:

- a Quaker teacher in Nazi Berlin who led an underground rescue network

- a Polish Catholic midwife in Auschwitz who defied the infamous Dr Mengele

- an interned English missionary who concealed a Polish Jew in her bathroom

- the 'Vatican Pimpernel' – a flamboyant Irish Monsignor who oversaw daring rescues

Executed by the Nazis after smuggling more than two hundred Jews to safety, the Dutch Christian Joop Westerweel quoted Matthew's Gospel: 'Those who lose their life for my sake will find it.'

It was inspiring and challenging to learn about Christians who risked their lives to rescue Jews from certain death in WW2. The love of Jesus for the downtrodden and oppressed was wonderfully exemplified through the courageous actions of these Christians. A well-written and uplifting book.

So encouraging to read of the courage of Christians supporting and helping the Jews during the 2nd World War. We do well to take note as anti-Semitism is rife in our present time and to remind us that He who watches over Israel neither slumbers or sleeps.
