This is an extraordinary account of Olaudah Equiano, a former 18th century slave. He was taught to read and write by one of his slave-masters who over time allowed him to buy his freedom. It records his harrowing journey from a Prince in his homeland to his perilous captivity as a slave; being exchanged several times and renamed more than once before his testimonial was published in Britain in 1789. It is an open and honest narrative of his observations and insights into human depravity and the atrocities of the slave trade benefitting its merchants, its owners and society. Despite what he experienced, he writes beautifully about the details of his conversion, his subsequence voyages as a freeman and campaign to end slavery. He is definitely worth the read alongside the more traditional canon of historical Christian literature gracing our bookshelves and to also be regarded as a key abolitionist in Britain at the time of an influencer, George Whitefield, and other notable Christian campaigners of his generation.
