It all started as an ordinary dinner party. But life was about to change forever for Denise, the new-in-town young ministers wife. Displaced from the security of her childhood home to work with her husband in the slums of Boston, it is while serving a candlelight dinner to friends that Denise encounters the town drunk, the entirely unloved Johnny Cornflakes. With his dramatic and unwelcome appearance, he spoils her picture-perfect social gathering and sets the stage for Denise's growing contempt of him. In the next surprising turn of events, Denise meets Johnny again this time at the church's Friday night Coffee House. As a group of troubled teenagers read from Matthew 25, the words of Jesus tug at their hearts when they are confronted by the noisy entrance of homeless, cold and hungry Johnny Cornflakes. It is the gaping hole in his shoe that captures their attention, and armed with compassion, they forge a plan to help this mysterious stranger. The heart-warming tale of Johnny Cornflakes is based on a true story, presented in vivid detail by master storyteller Denise George. The narrative offers hope even in difficult places, challenges our attitudes toward others and shows how God can work in the most unexpected ways through the most unlikely, unloved people.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This story is based on an experience earlier in Denise George’s life. Some names, dates and other things have been changed to make it more readable and the whole has been edited down to a slim book that can be read in an evening – hopefully by as many people as possible. Much more than ‘fiction’, which is why it is in the Biography category. Denise and her husband moved from the affluent south to the impoverished city of Chelsea, Massachusetts, where Timothy became pastor at the local Baptist church, to earn some money while he studied at Harvard Divinity School. At first Denise hated everything about the place. She had never before known that such poverty stricken people lived in her comfortable America. As she came to terms with her neighbours, finding there were those with hearts of gold among the seeming dregs of humanity, and those who protected their property despite the needs of those around them, she became more closely involved with all their lives than she could originally have believed possible. Johnny Cornflakes barged his way into her life early on, and his presence is there throughout the story even when he cannot be found. Thank you Christian Focus for bringing this to a wider readership: I was so taken with it I looked up Chelsea on the web, to read its history.
