A bestseller in its original Argentinian, Francis: Life and Revolution paints an intimate portrait of Jorge Bergoglio by Elisabetta Pique, a journalist who is also a close friend of the man who became the 266th and current Pope.

The warm, personal narrative is rich in character and evocation of the subject and biographer's shared Argentinian heritage, making this unique among books about Bergoglio. Pique tells the story of his upbringing, and journey through priesthood to the Vatican, the Curia and ultimately to his election as Pope. Her text includes her phone conversations with Bergoglio in the days preceding the announcement, his fears and modest denials when she told him she believed it would be him, and a fascinating never-before-reported account of the deliberations of the Conclave that elected him.

Before analysing the innovations and the polemic changes driven by the new Pope, the book tells of a good natured and kind man with a wonderful sense of humour married to strong convictions who risked his own life to help the victims of illegal repression in Argentina.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Written in an engaging style that draws you into the life of Pope Francis, we meet Jorge Bergoglio first through someone that knows him and has great respect for him and can see clearly how it is that Pope Francis has come to be such an amazing revolutionary Pope and is able to highlight for us his passion and character. Yes there are now plenty of books on Pope Francis, but this one is a lovely engaging one that really manages to convey his personality (or at least what I assume it is given I've never had the privilige of personally meeting him), his attitiude, humility, keeness of thought and courage of conviction in a way that is a joy to read. This is not just basic fact and analysis - though both are there, and the analysis is keen at points - but is rather an attempt to show the real man behind the pontifical title and work. It is 306 pages of tight, dense, small print - so it is surprisingly detailed and yet highly readable in style. I can honestly say I found it enjoyable, informative and interesting, and I would recommend it to others that want to know more about Pope Francis' background, agenda's and views. The only problem with this book though is the print, as mentioned above it is very small, I expect the size of the print though was to keep the page size down, however if you have any sort of sight problems you will likely need a page magnifier to make for a more comfortable read. With a magnifier in hand though the book will be worth the read.
