Robert Hicks is the man behind the Millennium Gospels and Back-to-Church Sunday, and this is the truly inspiring story of his life. Victim, along with his siblings, of a horrendous childhood, beaten and deprived of love, security, food or warmth, he was labelled ‘retarded’ at school, because of his dyslexia and his inability to speak clearly. This was due to his being tongue-tied, an ailment corrected by a simple operation at the age of fifteen. The consultant advised him to exercise his tongue by reading aloud – the only book at home was an old King James Bible and, as Robert began to read and recite, God began to speak to him through it. With a combination of talent and sheer hard work, he rose through the ranks in retailing, and then entered the world of Christian publishing – and found people there far less open to change and innovation! But he persevered and today is responsible for millions having access to the living word of God. A salutary read for anyone inclined to disqualify themselves from God’s work because of their circumstances. “If God can use me, He can use anyone,” Robert says; He did and He still does.
