I had seen this lady’s name as the author of many hymns, but had no knowledge of her as a person. As soon as I started to read I realised that she had lived much of her life in Worcestershire, not far from Leominster, Herefordshire, where I live now and that I knew many of the places mentioned. With this added appeal I quickly read on and became absorbed in her story. As usual with this series there are passages of biography interspersed with factual information to help anyone wanting to visit the places mentioned. Frances Ridley Havergal was born in 1836 and died forty-two years later, still unmarried, but already well known for her musical and written talent. As the youngest of six, she remained close to her father until his death, but with strained relations with her step-mother having lost her own Mother to cancer at the age of twelve. She spent much of her time with one or other of her married siblings and travelled widely with her siblings and friends. This is a detailed life history of a Victorian lady from a talented family. She devoted her time to ‘good works’ and her talent to writing hymns and devotional works for young people as well as older ones.
