Strictly speaking many authors have written pieces for this book. Jane Williams invited contributions from many Bishop’s wives – and a couple of husbands, and has woven these together with her own observations and experience. The result should be read by as many people as possible, particularly those who come into contact with any of these people, especially briefly, when there is no chance to get to know the ‘person’ behind the public figure. Many of the wives tell of a burden of care to their husband’s flock, when they felt they had no training to undertake the work expected of them. Most are conscious of doing God’s work, in some cases in very dificult circumstances. Their varied accounts of life as the spouse of a Bishop are revealing and informative and Jane Williams’s observations pertinent and helpful.
