For Christians interested in Japanese culture and history

This book follows Steve Metcalf, who ministered to a country resistant to God

A fascinating insight into a far-flung culture and courageous faith

"In Japan the Crickets Cry" is a fascinating missionary biography that provides inspiration for the need and power of forgiveness. The book follows the remarkable story of Steve Metcalf, who suffered as a victim of a terrifying regime conducted by Japanese guards.

Once the Second World War had finished, the China Inland Mission began a search for young men who were open to moving to Japan. Steve finished training and initiated his lifelong love of Japan. During the early years in Japan, Steve encountered difficulties with the country's culture: one where suicide was considered honorable and to be foreign was to be forever alien.

With God's supervision and support, Steve managed to bring many people to Christ amongst a very resistant culture. "In Japan the Crickets Cry" showcases the miracles that Steve encountered during his amazing journey.

"In Japan the Crickets Cry," is a profoundly human missionary biography and will inspire readers with its story of how the Grace of God has worked in the life of Steve Metcalf.

Loved this book! Admittedly I have known Steve Metcalf for almost 10 years (we attend the same Church) so I found it particularly fascinating to read about his past and some of the things he got up to, but it is also very thought provoking, (and funny in parts too)!! I also have great respect for this man, as even in his latter years when he is 'retired' he is still actively involved in reaching the Japanese community in the UK.

This is an absolutely astounding book that deals with some quite amazing issues such as the horror of war and being a prisoner, the journey of forgiveness, the love of a culture and finally the acceptance of Christ. This is one man's story, that man being Steve Metcalfe, and yet it is more than that, it is the story of a time and a culture that affected many and changed most. It is set out in small chapters, headed with Japanese titles and English translations, which makes it a quick and easy read, though some of what is covered in those chapters is not always easy to read. Certainly any one with an interest in the war and particularly Japan would be amiss not to read it - however it is also good to read for anyone else as it really does deal with the journey of a missionary as well, and the acceptance and growth that comes with accepting ones call and building on forgiveness - a lesson we all can learn from.
