'They will shoot you on the mountain pass.'

As the Communists gained control of China, all foreigners were forced out. The small team in Lisu province loaded their mules and set out across the mountains. As they ascended the icy slopes, the bleak mists mirrored their inner distress.

Joan had spent years trying to get to China. War and family problems had hampered her progress. Did God even want her there? But finally, reaching Zhajoue, Joan felt that she belonged somewhere. Then the communists came. Did God really have a plan?

60 years on, God's faithfulness and sovereignty are clear. Joan's story shows there are some lessons we can only learn with hindsight.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

The author succeeds in enticing us to accompany from childhood this brave, determined missionary in the ups and downs of her walk with God. The background is wartime Britain, and then China liberated from Japan and then fought over by Nationalists and Communists. Joan joins Jim Broadbent's family and small team in China Inland Mission work amongst the hitherto unreached remote and lawless Nosu tribes in the mountains of Daliangshan in Southern China. She is persistent in looking for every opportunity in word and action to win trust and share God's gospel of love, despite witchdoctors and shaman. The team's medical ministry unlocked doors, and converts were made who kept their faith through the communist years.
