A thoughtful book for times of loss

Beauty from Ashes offers 40 consoling readings

An honest journey through pain that is filled with understanding

'When my life seemed burnt to ashes, the last thing I could cope with was reading lengthy Bible passages, yet the Bible contains many verses which encourage and comfort people who are grappling with grief and loss. I began collecting these verses and sticking them all over my kitchen walls! My favourite verse reminded me that God could transform the ashes of my life into something new and beautiful. This book grew out my collection of 'kitchen verses' combined with some of the practical tips and helpful ideas, given to me at the time by others who know how it feels from personal experience'.

This is a new edition of a BRF classic that has, over the years, helped and comforted many people walking the hard road of grieving. Forty readings offer gentle guidance and consolation, from the earliest stage of groping for God's presence to realising the beginnings of new life and hope.

The book has four sections: The early stages, Walking through question marks, Dealing with the Lurkers and The return of spring.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Originally published in 2000, I wrote at the time - Bereavement comes in various forms, from the death of a loved one, to the loss of a job. The author has been through many struggles of her own, and shares the readings that she has collected around her to help her through. These are in sections from the initial, heavy sad feeling, through the anger and despair to the return of God given peace and even happiness. This is a book to keep by you for your own need, or to help others. You don’t have to read it steadily through, although the readings with their comment and prayer are numbered in days, it will be there with help, when you are ready to accept it. This is a welcome new edition. In her forward Jennifer says that if she wrote it now, she would do it differently, but realises that the original edition written so soon after ‘her life was burnt to ashes’ has helped many people, so she has retained that immediacy. Her conclusion at the end of the book is also revealing. Set out as 40 days of Bible reading, reflection and prayer, may it help many more with whatever type of bereavement they are suffering. Highly recommended.
