    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is an ecumenical 'resource and reference book' (p. x) for members of the English speaking Franciscan world, and also an excellent guide for the general reader, such as the reviewer. A member of the Secular Franciscan Order has described it as 'a good start' to anyone interested in finding out more about all things Franciscan. There are biographies of Francis and Clare, their 'Rules' and Prayers, with chapters on the 'Essentials of Franciscan Spirituality' and 'Living as a Franciscan'. Franciscan Offices and other prayers are included, with their Liturgical Calendar. There are short descriptions of the Saints and events commemorated and 'Some Franciscan tertiaries' (who include Christopher Columbus, St Jean Vianney, Archbishop Tutu, Lech Walesa and Blessed John XXIII). The history of the Order and 'The Franciscans in Ireland' precede suggested itineraries for Franciscan pilgrims to Assisi and the Holy Land, with a mention of the Californian Missions and The Greyfriars, Canterbury. A 'Glossary' is followed by a 'Bibliography', 'Websites' and 'Index'. One hopes that in the third edition, the specific sections on Ireland and The Greyfriars, Canterbury, will be complemented by similar ones. The volume is well laid out. Highly recommended - an example for other Orders to emulate.
