For every BCP service of Holy Communion, matins or evensong, where the sermon focuses on the Gospel of the day, here is an inspirational and practical companion for preachers, by a leading member of the Prayer Book Society. In its 350th anniversary year, many churches rediscovered the Book of Common Prayer which still remains the primary prayer book of the Church of England. This companion is also designed as a devotional guide, to be read in preparation for worship and is also ideal for the housebound. For each Sunday and saints' days in the year there is a commentary on the Gospel of the day, an appropriate verse or prose quotation, and a prayer in traditional language to harmonise with the KJV text used in the Prayer Book. The Book of Common Prayer has a one-year lectionary, nevertheless the Gospel readings cover all the seasons of the church's year and explore more general themes during the long season of Trinity.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

For anyone that regularly uses the BCP services this is a lovely companion work that focuses on the Gospel readings in a private and contemplative way. Digging past the surface layer of the reading, past the mere surface of the Service liturgy and liturgic value, but that nevertheless also attempts to fuse the history and relevance of these two things into a devotional work that paints a new picture beyond the surface sermon details. Here Raymond Chapman has used devotional works and prayers from a range of sermons, prayers and poems of other noteable people that probably would have well understood the BCP Gospel readings and context of service, even though many of them are not necesssarily of the anglican tradition. In doing so he brings fresh insight and relevance to a service that many no longer see as being relevant and there is in that a rightness to this book. You don't have to be a BCP adherent to obtain insight and relevance from this book because the devotions are of course based on Gospel readings and as such work well for anyone - however I do think if you are from the Anglican tradition then there is much here to be enjoyed ... regardless of which style of service you actually use.
