The first in the action-packed Tales of Rome series for middle-grade readers aged 8-12

A Captive in Rome is the first book in the enthralling Tales of Rome series of adventures for younger readers. The books are set at the time of the early church and follow the adventures of Bryn, a young Briton of the Iceni tribe. In this first book, Bryn and his brother are taken captive by the Romans after the Boudiccan revolt. They find themselves in Rome where Bryn is sold as a slave to a rich man; Bryn's brother, Conan, is forced into gladiatorial combat. Bryn is befriended by Tiro, a Christian and fellow slave, and they both try to free his brother from the deadly battles before it is too late.

Following young lads from capture in Britain to captivity in Rome, life in slavery and galadiatorial fights, is fascinating. The encounter with Christians and dawning understanding of how faith can help through difficult times is well written.

I bought this trilogy of books for my kids (aged 8 and 10)and ended up reading it myself (I love childrens' fiction!) It's an engaging story of a boy who is captured in Roman Britain, and taken to Rome as a slave. The author manages to bring ancient Rome alive for the reader, and I easily got caught up in the story and involved with the characters. I think my kids enjoyed it too!
