This historical romance is set in America in 1881. A young woman, Jancey, moves from Kansas City to the Amana Colonies in Iowa. It is a difficult decision to make but her parents want to return to a community that they had left before Jancey was born. Her mother is ill and the next few months may be their last chance to be together. In spite of the simple lifestyle, life quickly becomes complex and challenging for Jancey. She meets a young man in the colony who cares for her but a former employee of her father's follows her from Kansas to try and persuade her to marry him. The plot thickens and Jancey is quickly out of her depth. But the story is beautifully and believably told and kept my interest to the end. The simple, communal life style of the Amana Colonies reminded me of the Amish way of life. So as well as enjoying this well written story I was fascinated by the glimpses into a different way of living.
