Will a forbidden love destroy all they know?

Elizabeth Duncan has nowhere to turn. In charge of her younger brother and sister after their parents die, her options are limited: she can give in to the unwanted advances of an odious landowner--or she can flee.

When Elizabeth hears that the Shaker community in the next county takes in orphans, she presents herself and her siblings at Harmony Hill. Despite the hard work and strange new beliefs around her, Elizabeth is relieved to have a roof overhead and food to eat. But life gets complicated when she finds herself attracted to a handsome young Believer named Ethan.

Ethan has never looked on the opposite sex as anything but sisters, but he can't shake the new feelings that Elizabeth has awakened in him.

Will Elizabeth be forced to leave the village to keep Ethan from stumbling? Or could Ethan's love for her change their lives forever?

"Gabhart's characters are written with depth in her latest historical; they are not one-dimensional. Gabhart knows her Amish and Shaker history. There is an informational note in the front of the book, explaining the beliefs the Shakers had and why they all but disappeared." Romantic Times Book Review

Elizabeth Duncan and Ethan Boyd, the hero and heroine of The Believer, are fully formed characters with real emotions and desires. The Shaker brothers and sisters all have distinct personalities, and the setting of a Shaker community in the early 1800s is excellently recreated and was full of interest. Ann H. Gabhart must have done a lot of research, and it shows. I will certainly read more from this author's pen.

I have heard of the Shakers but have never known anything about them. This book is woven around the story of Elizabeth and her younger brother and sister. It takes us into the life of a Shaker village when their father dies suddenly and they need to flee from the owner of their home who is intent on marrying Elizabeth despite her protestations. We learn, as does Elizabeth and her siblings, what life in a Shaker community involves. The Shakers do not turn anyone away but expect those who join them to conform to their pattern of life and worship. Life is not all smooth in the community; there are some very lovable characters but others who are harsh and stern in their attitudes towards the three. Then there is the trouble caused by Colton who seeks her out and tells the Elders that Elizabeth belongs to him and should be handed over, and of course there is Ethan, a handsome young ?brother?.
