Born Beverly Marie Jones, the author retains a keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage Amish and Mennonite roots. Appearing regularly as a New York Times bestselling author, now with over eighty books to her name, Beverley began writing short stories and poetry at 9 years old. A former schoolteacher, and musician from the age of 5, much of her writing focuses on the life and community of the Old Order Amish. Beverley’s maternal grandmother, Ada Ranck Buchwalter, was born into the Mennonite Church – the origin of the Amish strand in the Anabaptist tradition. Her father was a pastor in Lancaster, Pennsylvania - the heartland of the Pennsylvania Dutch community.

Growing up, Beverley was raised as, and continues to be, part of the Assemblies of God community before going away to study at their affiliated Evangel University, Missouri. Married to David Lewis, the couple have 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren, and live in Colorado. Widely considered to be the originator and inspiration for the current wave of interest in Amish-related novels, her 1997 novel, The Shunning - an Amish based romance set in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania - was the year’s shock bestseller and has since sold more than a million copies.
