A simple change of scenery can change lives in powerful ways

Margaret, Rose, Jane, and Fran had a good thing going: meet every week in the quiet of their peaceful chapel and knit prayer shawls. No muss, just ministry. That is, until their pastor boots them out of the church in his last-ditch effort to revive the dwindling congregation.

Uptight Margaret isn't having it. Knitting prayer shawls where people can watch is the most ridiculous idea she's ever heard of, and she's heard plenty. Prayer belongs in the church, not out among the heathen masses. How are they supposed to knit holiness into these shawls if they're constantly distracted by the public? But with no choice, the others embrace the challenge. They pack their knitting bags and drag Margaret--grumbling the whole way--to the mall with them. She can't wait to prove them all wrong when it fails miserably, and show the pastor that she always knows best.

Without the familiar mold the group has been stuck in, their own losses, pain, and struggles rise to the surface. And the people and situations they encounter every time they try to sit quietly and knit are taking them a lot further out of their comfort zone than they ever imagined. Can they find the courage to tackle the increasing number of knotty issues they learn about in the community--or will the tangle be too much to unravel?

Sharon Mondragon's debut is warm and delightful, full of real laughter, grief, and personality. It beautifully illustrates the power of women across generations to reach people for Christ.

The book centres around four women who gather together in the prayer chapel in their church to knit prayer shawls. However, when the prayer chapel needs redecorating, they are forced to move out of their comfort zone and told by their pastor they need to find somewhere else to meet. They go reluctantly, well at least one of them is very reluctant, but things happen when they sit as a group in their shopping mall knitting. People are drawn to them and when they learn why these women knit, they come to them with their prayer requests. The prayer shawl ministry of these four women changes significantly by being out in the community and lives are changed as a result, not least their own. The story is much more than knitting shawls together. It is a story of growing friendships and relationships both between the four women and those who connect with them, asking for prayer. It is about faith and showing practical love for each other. It’s also interesting to see how each of the women cope with change – something that often happens in our own lives. It reminds me that, whatever our age, God has a purpose for us. One of the women, Rose, (who reminded me of my Nan), is a woman who not only loves to knit, but she also enjoys teaching others how to knit. She even begins a knitting group made up of some of the women from the care home where she lives. Although knitting is obviously a big part of this story, I don't think you need to have an interest in knitting in order to read this book. The characters are portrayed well, and I have no doubt they will remind you of people you know (they did for me). It’s these four women and the people they get to know as they knit, which was a big reason for my enjoyment of this book, and what kept me reading it. I used to knit a good deal with my Nan, although now I crochet more than knit. This book inspired me to keep crocheting and to also see purpose in my crocheting. I like to be inspired by what I read. I cannot wait for the next book in the series which is out in January 2024.
