Wounded hearts seek peace in Paradise, Pennsylvania, hoping to find refuge and heal their wounds from bombings overseas. Their entrance disturbs the calm, ordered community as their English ways collide with the Amish lifestyle. Will they find a way to build new lives and renew their faith? Jennie King gets horribly injured in a car-bomb attack on the other side of the world. When she awakens in a stateside hospital, she finds herself covered in one of her grandmother's Amish quilts. An accoompanying note invites her to visit Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to heal her body, mind, and spirit. During her recuperation, she renews her friendship with her grandmother's neighbor, Matthew Bontrager, a man Jennie had a secret crush on years ago. Matthew had intended to ask Jennie to marry him, but when her father objected, Matthew acquiesced. Now, when Jennie and Matthew meet again, they discover their feelings for each other have not changed. But Jennie has emotional and physical scars and though she feels she has come home to this man and this place, she's not sure she can bridge the difference between their worlds.

Jenny has been very badly injured by a terrorist bomb thrown at the group she was with, in Afghanistan, where she was reporting for her radio station about the effect war was having on the children in particular. Having been discharged from hospital, her good friend David, brings her to her Amish grandmother’s small farm, for some TLC and further help with physio and speech therapy. Her father had refused to be baptised into the Amish community, but her mother having died, she had spent some summer holidays here as a teenager. When her father realised she was getting too close to an Amish neighbour, he took her home and made sure her contact with Matthew was lost. All these years later, Jenny finds her love for the lifestyle undiminished, and her feelings for the now widowed Matthew and his three young children, grow stronger by the day.
