This beautifully written book is set in the 1840s in the Appalachia - the wild western mountains of Virginia. Esther Cherret is on the run: from her parents, from a scandal not of her own making and from herself. Her feisty yet deeply wounded character is realistically described and I was drawn through the book because I liked her and wanted to know the end of her story. She had hoped that taking up a position as a teacher in a place far from home, would be a refuge and delight. However, she finds herself in the middle of a deadly family feud which makes her want to run away again. The twists and turns of the plot also kept me on my toes - romance, deception, tenderness, and reconciliation - they are all movingly portrayed. A romantic page-turner well worth the read.

Flirtatious, spoiled Esther Cherrett is used to doing what she wants, whenever she wants. When her reputation is threatened, she is forced to leave town and take a job teaching in the Appalachian mountains of western Virginia. There she encounters family feuds, romance, and mystery. VERDICT Attention to historical detail and an evocative setting make this a nice addition to Eakes?s series (Lady in the Mist; Heart?s Safe Passage). Recommend it to readers who enjoy Bodie Thoene?s historical novels.
