More Than a Dream delves into a story of an aspiring writer, balanced on the edge of success. Writing small stories and articles for a local newspaper to pay his way through college, Thorliff’s world suddenly turns upside down when a disaster hits his hometown town of Blessing in North Dakota. Left in turmoil and reeling from lost friends, Thorliff starts to realise that his dream of becoming a writer is a distant dream to what is going on around him now.

Elizabeth is anxiously anticipating to hear if she has been accepted from a medical school she has applied for. As she waits she takes a nursing job at a hospital for women in Chicago and witnesses a devastating experience in the hospital to transform her world. Placing stress on her relationship with God and exposing her to the real world, which is a far cry away from her affluent and cosy life.

Life continues back on the Bjorklund farm in Blessing, Thorliff is successfully writing and helping publish the Northfield paper and paying his way through college, and Elizabeth is still intent on becoming a doctor, building on what she has learnt from Northfield’s doctor, by working again at the Chicago hospital, where Dr Morganstein holds a high opinion of her capabilities. Thorliff and Elizabeth’s friendship is close, but only friendship, until Elizabeth is abducted and rescued by Thorliff, when their relationship deepens. When Thorliff returns home to a stricken Blessing which has suffered severe flooding, and realises the desperate need for a doctor, he pleads for Elizabeth to come – and she responds. A happy ending to this particular chapter of the Red River saga, the different strands of which are woven together so engagingly by Lauraine Snelling.
