‘Sweet Mercy’ is a rousing historical drama with strong undertones of romance, suspense and faith.

Forced into redundancy, Eve Marryat’s family is forced to move away from St. Paul, Minnesota. Thankfully family steps in to offer Eve’s dad a job and lodging at the Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge. 1913 was a time of under the table deals and corporate corruption, so joining the family business seemed like a God send.

Moving back to her father’s home town in Ohio is a dream come true for Eve, as all she ever wanted was to escape from the ghetto’s and gangsters of St. Paul. But the naive seventeen year old soon discovers that her uncle’s lodge is a front for something far more sinister and dangerous. When Eve is faced with a dilemma, will she risk everything to protect her family?

This coming-of-age drama is a gripping read blending together mystery, suspense and a rich historical setting. Lovers of historical and mystery will find ‘Sweet Mercy’ a thrilling read.

Stunning coming-of-age drama set during the Great Depression and Prohibition

When Eve Marryat's father is laid off from the Ford Motor Company in 1931, he is forced to support his family by leaving St. Paul, Minnesota, and moving back to his Ohio roots. Eve's uncle Cyrus has invited the family to live and work at his Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge.

Eve can't wait to leave St. Paul, a notorious haven for gangsters. At seventeen, she considers her family to be "good people," not lawbreakers like so many in her neighborhood. Thrilled to be moving to a "safe haven," Eve soon forms an unlikely friendship with a strange young man named Link, blissfully unaware that her uncle's lodge is anything but what it seems.

When the reality of her situation finally becomes clear, Eve is faced with a dilemma. Does she dare risk everything by exposing the man whose love and generosity is keeping her family from ruin? And when things turn dangerous, can she trust Link in spite of appearances?

What a charming read, set in the US in the time of the roaring 20s and 30s and the notorious Al Capone, Sweet Mercy is a novel about a naive and 'good girl' called Eve Marryat. She is brought up in a loving Christian household in St Paul, Minesota, until her father loses his job and they are forced to accept an invitation by a relative for work. So Eve and her parents move to Mercy to work for her Uncle Cyrus at the Marryat Island Ballroom and lodge. All is going well until Eve and her father dicover that gangsters have made their way to Mercy and all is not well. Sweet Mercy follows Eve as she grows up and experiences life through working, falling in love for the first time and then a second time and learning that the world is not an honest and nice place sometimes and the poeople you thought you could trust are not who you wished they were. I enjoyed this book, it is well written and easy to read. This is the second book by Tatlock that I have read and I would definately read another. She has another eight for me to read, so I'll look out for those.

In this coming-of-age novel, Christy winner Tatlock (All the Way Home) manages to offer readers an eclectic mixture of suspense and romance combined with deeply rooted historical elements. After her father is laid off from automotive giant Ford Motor Company in 1931, in the early years of the Great Depression, Eve Marryat is elated to move to Mercy, Ohio, from St. Paul, Minn., where she witnessed a gangland murder related to a bootlegging operation. The 17-year-old Eve considers Mercy her promised land and her chance to leave behind the St. Paul gangsters and forget about ?that murder? forever. Cyrus, Eve?s paternal uncle, offers the family an opportunity to live and work at his business, the Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge. Once settled, Eve and her dad Andrew quickly find out that Mercy has secrets, and Eve?s safe haven turns into a crime scene right under her nose. Tatlock presents endearing but flawed characters who prompt readers to explore their own bases for judgment and ethical criticism.
